Subject: Urgent Action Needed to Address Homelessness in Detroit Dear [Senator/Representative] [Last Name], I am deeply concerned that HUD may not honor its Fiscal Year 2024 (FY24) awards for $37.7 million in Continuum of Care (CoC) renewal grants for Detroit. These grants are crucial as they fund housing and supportive services for homeless and disabled households. The Detroit Continuum of Care serves Detroit, Highland Park, and Hamtramck, receiving $37,705,141 from HUD across 47 grants. These funds support 18 local agencies providing services to over 1,800 vulnerable households, including homeless adults, youth, families, people with disabilities, veterans, survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking, and those with substance use and mental health disorders. Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) is the primary project covered by CoC funding, providing long-term rental assistance and wrap-around supports. This program has a 99% success rate in keeping individuals stably housed. CoC funding also supports Transitional Housing and Rapid Re-Housing programs. We are asking you to: 1. Use your voice and power to urge HUD to honor the FY24 funding awards that were announced in early January and expeditiously administer grant contracts and funding to our community and communities across the nation. 2. Vote no for any FY25 budget proposal that cuts HUD funding. Any cut of funding will directly result in people returning to homelessness and a shortage of resources to help them regain stability. 3. Fight against efforts to cut federal employees working for HUD as this will further slow down the process to administer the FY24 grants that our community desperately needs. Lastly, cutting connections to SSI, Medicaid, SNAP benefits, HeadStart/childcare support, and other public programs exacerbate financial precarity and increases homelessness risk. We urge you to protect these vital services and ensure HUD honors its FY24 funding commitment.
