(scroll down for details on Project Homeless Connect)
What is Every Person Counts 2008? It is part of a state-wide effort to count our homeless this July. HAND, along with several other communities in Michigan, will conduct a point-in-time count of sheltered and unsheltered homeless on the evening of July 24, 2008. This point-in-time count will enable HAND to ramp up its plan for the official count mandated by HUD in January 2009, and help us get a better sense of the seasonal realities of homelessness in our area.
What good will counting the homeless do? In order to obtain the resources we need to help our homeless return to lives of security and belonging, we need to know the extent and nature of the problem. The data that we collect will help us understand, care, and effectively advocate real change.
How can I be involved? Volunteers are needed to help the night of the count - July 24, 2008. The count will take place in that evening. If you are interested in volunteering, please download and complete the volunteer interest form, and return it to Ron Riggs at NSO by faxing it to him at (313) 832-5271 or emailing it to him at rriggs@nso-mi.org. We will also be having a meeting on Wednesday, June 4 at 3:30 PM at the University of Detroit Mercy. This is a meeting for individuals interested in being a team leader or a team member. At this meeting we will be discussing some of the details of the count night. This meeting will be held in the ballroom of the Student Center at the University of Detroit. The campus is located at 4001 W. McNichols Road, Detroit, 48221. A map of the campus may be downloaded by clicking here. The Student Center is building #20 on the map.
What is Project Homeless Connect? Project Homeless Connect (PHC) is a companion event to Every Person Counts. PHC is a one-day event that will take place on Friday, July 25, 2008 . The purpose of this event is two-fold: first, to provide "real time", needed assistance to people who are homeless and second, to complement the work done during the night of the 24th by collecting additional information and data on the people served.
How can I be involved? Volunteers will be needed during this event, to help welcome and assist the individuals who come. If you are interested in to helping, please download and complete the volunteer interest form, and return it to Amanda Sternberg by faxing it to (313) 831-9701 or emailing it to asternberg@swsol.org. Additional information on volunteer training is forthcoming. In the meantime, if you have questions, contact Amanda Sternberg at (313) 831-9555 x244 or asternberg@swsol.org.
